Correct stacking is more than play Tetris
Everyone knows the classic game Tetris. As in the game, in reality the same applies: Who thinks first and stacks wisely wins!
Which Tetris technique is the best for storage is up to each individual to decide.
These simple tips will help you to store your goods optimally, safely and dry.
Correct packaging
Clever storage alone is not enough for optimum goods storage.
It is important that your items are properly packed:
- Pack household goods and small items in stackable, sealable boxes and not in laundry baskets, carrier bags, paper bags or similar.
- Wrapping paper, old newspapers or bubble wrap protect smaller objects and fragile items.
- Do not overload the moving boxes so that you can carry them alone and stack them easily.
- Clothes can be folded in common moving boxes or stored hanging on the hanger in special clothing boxes.
- High-quality jackets, coats and other favourite items belong in vacuum packaging.
- Label all moving boxes - preferably on the front side of the handle.
- Carpets and mattresses should be cleaned, treated with moth repellent and packed airtight.
- Pack pictures and mirrors in bubble wrap.
- Furniture is best protected from scratches and dust with woollen/furniture blankets.
Inform yourself in advance
Depending on the self-storage provider, the storage units are more or less easily accessible. Clarify in advance what the access times and delivery options are. And what about additional services? Clarify the following points:
- Is the warehouse conveniently located?
- Are visitor parking spaces available?
- Are the delivery options good? Ramp / goods lift?
- Are the corridors and doors wide enough and the paths rollable without thresholds/stairs?
- Is access guaranteed 24/7?
- Are trolleys available?
- Can additional services be booked? E.g. storage racks, transport service, packing material?
Store correctly, logical and space-saving
It is of course advisable to store any material in a space-saving manner. Pack small materials in stackable, sealable cartons and not in laundry baskets, carrier bags, paper bags or similar. Large furniture should be dismantled and the individual parts (e.g. a wardrobe or a double bed) should be placed upright in the storage box. In general, many pieces of furniture can be stored on edge, such as tables and sofas.
As with Tetris, the motto here is: think first, then stack!
Think about how to optimally store your storage box and even draw a plan if necessary.
Please note the following:
- Easy access: Build a corridor between your stored objects and ensure freedom of movement.
- Leave some space between stored objects and walls for air circulation.
- Ask yourself: 1) What do I often need? 2) What do I need from time to time? 3) What do I not actually need? The third one you store at the back and at the bottom. The second one a little further forward and the first one within easy reach.
- Important here: heavy and large things generally belong on the floor, small and light things upwards.
